  • Wet pavement: be careful. Smooth-ish indoor rubber on wet, polished surfaces — station floors, painted concrete, tiled entrances — is where owners are most likely to feel the shoe slide. It isn’t dangerous; it does mean the XV is not the shoe for a rainy commute involving hard floors.
  • Grass, gravel, trails: no. Obvious, but stated for completeness. There is nothing here to grip loose ground with.

What aging does to rubber

Rubber hardens. Over decades, outsole compounds lose plasticiser and stiffen. Harder rubber grips less, particularly on smooth surfaces where grip depends on the compound conforming to microscopic texture. An old XV’s traction can therefore be noticeably worse than the same model’s traction when new — not because the pattern wore down, but because the material changed.

  2. Press the rubber with a thumbnail. Slightly yielding is healthy. Glassy and unyielding means the compound has hardened.
  3. Flex the shoe and watch the forefoot. Fine wrinkles are normal; cracking sounds or visible fissures are not.
  4. Run a fingernail around the entire glue line. Uniform and tight is good. Gaps, drips of re-glue, or heavy yellowing are the signals that matter most.
  5. Check both shoes. Pairs age asymmetrically depending on how they were stored and which one saw more wear.

None of this is XV-specific — it applies to any shoe of this construction era — but the XV’s supply skews old, so it applies to the XV constantly.

Bottom line

Competent for its purpose, unremarkable out of it, and increasingly a function of age. As a 1999 indoor basketball outsole, the XV’s grip was solid on clean hardwood and dust-sensitive like everything else of its generation. As a casual shoe in 2026, it’s fine dry, slippery wet, and best kept away from anything that resembles weather.

The honest headline is that traction is not the thing to worry about with an XV. If you’re evaluating a pair, the outsole matters mostly as a window into the pair’s real condition — the glue lines and the hardness of the rubber tell you what the seller won’t. Everything else in the traction review is secondary to the simple fact that nobody should be playing serious basketball in this shoe now, no matter how well the pattern has held up.
