The Air Jordan 15's Woven Kevlar Upper: A Materials Review
The woven upper is the best thing about the Air Jordan XV, and it is the reason the shoe still looks presentable on feet that have worn it for years. A dense textile incorporating Kevlar — the aramid fibre known from aerospace and body armour — over leather at the eyestay and heel, it resists the failure modes that define aging leather sneakers, and it was roughly a decade ahead of the industry.
If you buy one argument for the XV as a piece of design rather than a punchline, this should be it.
Why fabric instead of leather
It was a functional bet, not a styling flourish. The XV’s fit comes from an inner sleeve, and a sleeve fit needs an exterior that flexes with the foot rather than resisting it in stiff panels. Leather of the weight used in 1990s basketball shoes doesn’t do that; it holds shape, which is exactly what a laced shell wants and exactly what a sleeve doesn’t. Woven aramid gave containment and abrasion resistance while flexing, and it did so at less mass than equivalent leather — which matters given how substantial the shoe already is.
It was also thematically right. Tinker Hatfield’s reference was the X-15 rocket plane, and an aerospace fibre on a shoe named after an aerospace programme is the kind of coherence that makes the design story hang together. But the material would have been the correct engineering answer even without the metaphor.
It aged into the mainstream. Woven and knit uppers became ubiquitous in performance and lifestyle footwear more than a decade after the XV shipped. The shoe that carried the idea first got laughed at for its shape while its material thinking quietly won.
How it looks and behaves in person
Photographs flatten it. This is the single most consistent XV conversion story and it is largely about this material. The weave has visible depth and a subtle directional sheen that a product shot renders as a uniform grey-black mass. In person it reads as texture — closer to technical fabric than to sneaker upper. It’s why the shoe looks so much better on foot than in listings.
It gives the eye something to do. The XV’s silhouette is one large, mostly unbroken form, which would be visually deadening in smooth leather. The weave breaks the surface at close range without adding panel lines. Take the texture away — as some collaborative versions did by rebuilding the shoe in suede, discussed in our PSNY piece — and the shape has to carry itself alone.
It flexes without creasing structurally. Leather toeboxes develop permanent fold lines that only deepen. The weave bends and returns. Owners of well-worn XVs consistently report that the upper is the part still looking good when everything else has gone.
Wear and abrasion, honestly
Scuffs polish rather than scar. Where leather takes a scrape as a pale gouge, the weave tends to take on a slight sheen at contact points — toe box, medial forefoot, the outer edge near the collar. Some wearers dislike this shine; most find it far less disfiguring than leather scuffing.
Snagging is the real risk. Abrasion resistance is a strength; puncture and pull resistance in a woven textile is a different property. A sharp edge can lift a thread, and a lifted thread on a weave is more visible and less fixable than a scuff. Nothing catastrophic, but treat the upper as fabric rather than armour despite the fibre’s reputation.

The leather trim behaves like leather, but there’s little of it. The eyestay and heel panels crease and scuff conventionally. Because they’re small, the wholesale creasing that ruins large leather toeboxes never gets a chance to happen.
Keeping it clean
Nothing exotic is required, and we’d be cautious with anything aggressive on a material this old.
- Dry-brush first. Most of what’s on a woven upper is dust sitting in the weave. A soft brush removes it without introducing moisture to an aging shoe.
- Spot-clean gently, with minimal water. Work with the weave direction, not across it, and don’t saturate — water that gets into the substrate has to leave through the same interior that already dries slowly.
- Skip the harsh solvents. Whatever they’d do to the textile, they’re being applied millimetres from glue lines that are decades old.
- Let it dry away from heat. Direct heat is hard on adhesives and on the moulded parts, including the tongue.
How the material dates the shoe — and doesn’t
The upper is not what limits an XV’s life. Foams and adhesives degrade on the calendar regardless of wear, and every wearable XV is a retro of some age. You will retire a pair because its midsole has gone, not because its weave failed. That asymmetry is genuinely unusual: on most vintage sneakers, upper and sole deteriorate together.
Construction has varied across retro runs. Retros of the shoe’s late-2000s return and the faithful original-colourway retros of the late 2010s generally kept the woven character; some collaborative versions replaced it entirely. Bottom line
Best-in-shoe, and arguably best-in-line. The XV’s woven upper is durable, distinctive, low-maintenance, better in person than in photographs, and vindicated by an entire industry adopting the idea later. It is the part of this shoe that requires no defending and no hedging.
The XV lost its argument on silhouette. On materials, it was simply right, twelve years early.
